Willowharbor Credit, a small-business funding broker in Bloomington, Illinois, explains how inventory financing works for McLean County retailers, wholesalers and other stock-holding businesses, then sends requests to lending partners that offer it. Partners decide how much stock they will finance, at what advance and at what price.

Inventory financing, briefly
A partner advances money to buy goods for resale, and the goods secure the debt. As the stock sells, the proceeds repay the advance. Partners usually lend against only part of the stock's value, because inventory can lose value, go out of style or sit unsold. The structure fits when you can show how fast the stock moves and what it sells for.
Retail and wholesale stock in McLean County, IL
Stock-holding businesses are a large part of the county's employer base. McLean County had 496 retail trade establishments with employees in 2023, the most of any sector, plus 176 wholesale trade establishments (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Retailers reported about $297.2 million in annual payroll and wholesalers about $317.9 million. The Census separately counted 1,082 retail businesses with no paid staff in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics 2024), a different program and year.
In ZIP code 61701, which takes in downtown Bloomington, IL, retail trade was also the largest sector, with 165 of the ZIP's 960 employer establishments in 2023 (ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023).
Collateral and the UCC filing
Most inventory lenders file a UCC-1 financing statement with the Illinois Secretary of State, a public notice that they hold a security interest in the inventory, and sometimes in other business assets too. That filing affects what other lenders will do later: a second lender may decline, or ask to be subordinate. Ask exactly what the filing covers. A blanket lien over all business assets is broader than a lien on the financed stock alone.
What floor plan financing means
Floor plan financing is a type of inventory financing for high-value items sold one at a time, such as vehicles, boats or large equipment. The lender pays the manufacturer or distributor for each unit, the dealer pays the lender back when that unit sells, and the lender checks the stock in periodic audits. Most small retailers buy many low-value items instead, so a general inventory line or a business line of credit is usually closer to what they need.
Inventory financing versus factoring
The two get confused because both turn assets into cash. With inventory financing, the collateral is merchandise still sitting on your shelves or in the warehouse. Factoring sells or borrows against invoices for goods or services already delivered, where a customer owes you money. A wholesaler selling on 30-day terms might use both: inventory financing to buy the stock, then factoring or a receivables line once invoices are out.
Inventory, a credit line or working capital
| Structure | Secured by | Fits best |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory financing | The stock being bought | Large, planned stock purchases with a known sell-through |
| Line of credit | Receivables, other assets or a personal guarantee | Smaller, repeated orders |
| Working capital | Varies by partner | A one-time gap that is not tied to particular goods |
Records that help an inventory request
- A current inventory list with cost and expected selling price
- Sell-through history: how many weeks a typical item sits before it sells
- Supplier invoices, purchase orders or terms
- Recent statements from the business bank account, and the last tax returns filed
The steps of a request explain what happens after you call. Retail is one of the sectors partners work with; see funding by sector for how it sits next to construction, restaurants and medical practices, and the Bloomington, IL page for the county's business mix. All six structures are compared on the comparison page.
